Reptile Discovery Programs 2002/2003 North American Tour

Journal

  We’ve had visitors!

In March 2002, I began a tour of schools that is taking me across the United States from Key West in the state of Florida all the way to state of Washington.

You can follow my travels on this web page.  You can read stories about the places that I visit and the people that I meet.  You can look at photographs of the animals that I see in the wild and in zoos across the country.

Write me at
shwedick@aol.com, ask me questions about my travels, ask me questions about reptiles and let me know what you enjoy seeing in this journal.

April 16, 2002:  Students at Rockway Elementary in Miami, Florida enjoy spending some quality time with Myron the Yellow-footed tortoise.

April 16, 2002:  On my way to Poinciana Elementary   in Key West, I stopped in Key Largo to photograph  the boat used by Humphrey Bogart and Katherine  Hepburn in the famous adventure movie “The African  Queen.”

April 17, 2002: My birthday! I spent a terrific day at Poinciana Elementary and then visited the Sea Turtle Museum in Key West.

April 18, 2002:  The Malayan Gharial is one of the world’s most unusual crocodilians.  They live in rivers and peat swamps on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia.  This 12-foot long male at the Miami Metrozoo is part of a program to breed this endangered species.

Alligator # 8. This is one of 191 American alligators that I observed basking in the sun along U.S. Highway 41, as I drove thru Big Cypress National Preserve.

This Gopher Tortoise was grazing on grass and small plants when I photographed it on the side of the road in Punta Gorda.
